What to Give for a Milestone Birthday

What to Give for a Milestone Birthday

A milestone birthday is a different job from a birthday. The gift is standing in for a whole decade, so it wants to be something that lasts, something that gets shared, or something good enough to be remembered. Pick one of those three and every other decision gets easier.

The rest of this is how to tell which of the three you are in, what to do when you cannot be at the party, and how to handle a group all going in together. If you already know what you want, our birthday gift hampers are the place to start.

Why a milestone is a different job

An ordinary birthday gift is a small kindness. A fortieth or a sixtieth is a marker, and people treat it as one. They remember who turned up, what was said and, quietly, what was given. That is not a reason to spend more. It is a reason to spend more attention.

The practical difference is that a milestone gift is usually opened in front of other people. A joke present that works one to one can land badly across a room, and something very personal can leave the recipient explaining it to an audience. Choose something that reads well in public and still means something privately.

Shared, kept or consumed

Three shapes work, and blurring them is where most milestone gifts go wrong.

Shared means the gift becomes part of the day: opened at the table, passed around, finished that night. Kept means an object that stays in the house long after the party. Consumed means something good enjoyed slowly over the following weeks, which is where a food or drink gift does its best work.

Consumed is the safest of the three for an adult who already owns what they need, because it leaves nothing behind to find room for. Our celebration range is built for the shared version, and a prosecco gift is the straightforward answer when the day itself is the whole occasion.

What to spend

A milestone usually moves the gift up one level, not two. If you would normally send something modest, a big birthday is a reason to move to the middle of the range rather than to the top of it. Going far past what the relationship supports puts the recipient in an awkward position in front of everyone, which is the one thing a milestone gift cannot afford to do.

Rather than fixing on a number, work in ranges and shop inside one. Our larger hampers are where most fiftieth and sixtieth gifts land when one person is buying alone, and the luxury range is the right shelf when the milestone genuinely warrants it, or when several people are putting in together.

When you cannot be there

Send it to arrive a day or two before, not on the morning itself. A milestone day is busy and often spent out of the house, so a parcel that turns up mid-party gets opened later or not at all. Arriving early also gives the recipient the choice of putting it on the table.

Same-day dispatch is available on orders placed before 1pm AEST/AEDT on weekdays, excluding public holidays, and standard delivery is free on hampers priced $100 or more, a flat $14.95 per hamper under that, with no handling markups. Interstate takes longer than most people expect around a public holiday, and sending a birthday gift interstate goes through the timing properly.

Groups going in together

A group gift solves the money problem and creates a coordination one. The version that works is simple: one person chooses, one person pays, everyone else transfers, and the card carries every name. The version that fails is a committee, because a committee produces the safe option nobody remembers.

Keep the group small enough that the decision can be made in a day. If it is large, split it. One substantial gift from everyone, and anyone who wants to add something personal does it separately rather than folding it into the same parcel.

Where to start

Work out which of the three shapes fits, then shop inside it instead of browsing everything. Our birthday hampers are the obvious first stop, gift ideas for a fortieth covers the most common milestone in more detail, and choosing a gift for a big moment is the wider guide sitting behind all of it. Every order includes a free personalised gift card, and everything is hand-packed in Australia and sent Australia-wide, so the only real work left is the message.

Enjoy responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

How much more should you spend on a milestone birthday?

One level up, not two. A milestone is a reason to move from a modest gift to a mid-range one, and only occasionally a reason to go to the top of the range. The ceiling is the relationship, not the birthday: a gift that is obviously beyond what the friendship or the family connection supports leaves the recipient uncomfortable in front of a room of people. If the milestone deserves more than you can sensibly spend alone, go in with others and put every name on the card. That is a better answer than stretching.

What do you give someone turning 50 who buys their own things?

Something consumed. An adult who already owns what they want has no space problem to solve and no shortage of objects, so the gift that works is one that gets used up and leaves nothing to store. Good food and drink do this well because they are enjoyed slowly and shared without ceremony. If you want more on the general problem of choosing for somebody who is difficult to buy for, our guide to choosing a gift for a big moment works through it.

Is alcohol a safe milestone gift?

Only when you know the person drinks, and know roughly what they drink. It is a strong milestone gift precisely because it gets opened with other people, which is also why it is a poor guess. If you are not sure, choose something else rather than asking around: our alcohol-free options cover the same occasion without putting anyone in the position of explaining. Where alcohol is right, keep it to something the recipient can open on the day or keep for later. Enjoy responsibly.
